Hunters Dream
by Jerry O. Finley

It all started out about 3:00 p.m. on September 29, 2005. I took my bow and treestand and headed out to the woods on the farm which my wife Joanne and I have lived on and hunted 49 years. I had never set up in this tree before that night. All was very quiet until about six o'clock. Wind perfect, temperature great, the mosquitoes were even quiet! Then all of a sudden two does walked passed my stand, then ten minutes later three does went by. About 6:30 a long ways a way I saw a buck coming. He looked like a good one. After what seemed like forever he stopped broadside, 22 yards away. What a shot, what a buck and he was in my sights! I pulled and shot; he never knew I was there.

I was really positive on the placement of the shot. I waited about ten minutes and then climbed down from my 18-ft high stand and circled around and headed for home – BOY WAS I EXCITED! I called my grandson Jesse for help but no answer. So I called my grandson Dusty and he answered. I told him I could use help tracking and those young eyes would really help. “I will be right there grandpa!!” I heard him say. I set back and enjoyed a cup of coffee while waiting. Dusty picked up Jesse, arrived shortly and were ready to go. He was heart shot and left very little blood sign to follow. Were they ever excited for me when we found the buck, a 10-pointer and a dandy!

Just after we found the buck my son Jerry Jr., grandson Andrew, and friend Brad Blanchard showed up. Good hunting news travels fast. All of them are good bowhunters. What a thrill to share this with tem and feel the excitement of bowhunter success. The 10-point Pope and Young buck (it was later scored at something over 155) was shot with a Bear broadhead and a bow I bought in 1982. It still shoots like the day I got it.

I hope you all have a great hunting season in 2006. I know I'll still be climbing trees and watching for that next “Dream Buck!”
